How we use iDesign to customize your LASIK procedure

For people who would like to be free of the need for glasses or contacts, laser vision correction is an option. While there are a few different types of laser vision correction procedures, the most common one is known as LASIK. During a LASIK procedure, a laser is used to alter the shape of the cornea, which is the clear tissue at the front of the eye. By changing the way that light enters the eye, this results in clearer vision. Many people no longer rely on corrective lenses (glasses or contacts) after the procedure.
In order to achieve the clearest possible vision after LASIK, it’s important for the procedure to be very precise. We use an advanced system known as iDesign to achieve the highest possible level of precision, so we can get the best outcomes for our patients.
How does iDesign work?
The iDesign system has two major components, which work together to help us customize your LASIK procedure.
One of these is known as corneal topography. The system scans the surface of the cornea, which is the clear tissue at the front of the eye, and uses the scan to create a very detailed map of the cornea.
The other part of the system is known as wavefront analysis. This involves scanning the interior of the eye. By shining light into the eye and doing precise measurements of how the light is reflected back, the iDesign system is able to create a complete and highly detailed map of your eye.
How are these measurements used?
Ultimately, the measurements taken by the iDesign system are used to customize your LASIK procedure.
Using the wavefront analysis of your vision, we can determine exactly what visual corrections you will need to achieve clear vision. Because the measurements are so detailed, we can correct for even very small optical aberrations (changes in how light passes through the eye).
The corneal topography measurements are also helpful for treatment planning. LASIK involves using a laser to reshape the cornea. To get a very precise outcome, it’s helpful to have a detailed map of the current shape of the cornea. This allows us to plan the precise reshaping of that tissue by the laser.
