LASIK surgery is one of the most common vision correction procedures. It is designed to reduce your dependency on glasses and contact lenses. North County Laser Eye Associates is equipped with LASIK technology including the VISX S4™ laser, which can perform customized Wavefront™ treatments. In addition, we have an excimer laser on site.
What is LASIK?
LASIK, or Laser-Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis, is an FDA-approved refractive procedure that is performed on nearly 1 million patients each year. LASIK surgery corrects nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism by changing the shape of the cornea.

LASIK surgery may not be right for everyone. To find out if you are a good candidate for LASIK, consider the questions below:

- Has your prescription been stable for one year or more?
- Is your prescription within -1.00 to 11.00 diopters of myopia?
- Is your prescription up to +5.00 diopters of farsightedness?
- Do you have an astigmatism up to 5.00 diopters?
- Are your eyes healthy and free of disease or serious ailments?

What Happens During LASIK Surgery?
During LASIK surgery here at our northern San Diego (Carlsbad) office, a small incision is made to create a flap in the surface of the cornea. The corneal flap is folded back to expose the internal cornea. Next, a computer-controlled excimer laser is used to reshape the stroma. Finally, the corneal flap is placed into its original position. Because the cornea bonds quickly, no stitches are needed and healing is rapid.
If you live in San Diego County and are tired of the worry and hassle of glasses, contact us in Carlsbad to schedule a consultation with our LASIK eye surgeon. He will discuss your options and determine if you are a good candidate for LASIK surgery.
Custom LASIK
Your vision is as unique as your fingerprint. That is why we utilize the VISX S4™ laser to perform customized Wavefront™ LASIK treatments. Wavefront™ technology allows our LASIK eye surgeon to provide LASIK that is custom-tailored to your own ‘visual fingerprint.’
During your consultation at our Carlsbad office, we will use Wavefront™ technology to map out the unique characteristics of your vision. Any visual irregularities are displayed on a 3-D map, or Wavefront™ map. This information is then transferred to the VISX S4™ laser and matched to the position of your eyes, which allows our LASIK eye surgeon to provide the best possible vision for your unique eyes.
The VISX S4™ laser is FDA-approved. If you think that custom LASIK may be right for you, contact us in Carlsbad (North San Diego) today to schedule a consultation.
What are the Benefits of LASIK Surgery?
Most patients who have LASIK reduce their need for glasses or contact lenses.
People are usually able to return to their normal activities one day after LASIK, and many patients report significantly improved vision the day of surgery.

Are There Risks Associated with LASIK?
Every surgical procedure has some degree of risk, and LASIK surgery is no exception; however, the overwhelming majority of patients who undergo LASIK are back to work the day after surgery.
We think it is important for you to have all of the information you need when making the decision to have LASIK, including the risks. Possible risks of LASIK surgery include excessively dry eyes, corneal scarring, persistent eye discomfort, glares and halos, and a decreased ability to see well at night or in fog.
